Presentation of the Mary Wilson Cup
Heather McClelland, 23, who won the Ladies’ Open competition in the Club’s tournament, has been awarded a new trophy: the Mary Wilson Cup.

Much-missed Mary Wilson had a long and happy association with Chorley Tennis Club and was honorary President for many years, until her recent, very sad death. In recognition of this association the Club, together with Lindsay Hoyle MP, a great friend and colleague of Mary’s, bought a new trophy to be awarded to the winner of the Ladies’ Open competition every year. The trophy will be known as the Mary Wilson Cup.

Lindsay congratulated Heather, an Oxford graduate, on winning the Ladies’ Open and said he was especially pleased to present the new Mary Wilson Cup in memory of his friend. He highlighted how Mary had found time among her many activities to be a long-standing and fervent supporter of Chorley Tennis Club and how pleased he was that the Club had found this way to commemorate her.

“Mary had varied interests and will be sadly missed by people at the Tennis Club as well as by many other local organisations and individuals,” Lindsay said. “It’s appropriate that Club players will be able to remember her in this way for many years to come.”

Barry Entwisle, the Club’s Vice Chairman, said: “We are very glad to ensure that Mary Wilson’s enthusiasm and generosity to the Club won’t be forgotten, and wish to thank Lindsay for his kind contribution to the Mary Wilson Cup. We congratulate Heather, a longstanding and very popular member of the Club, and look forward to the Cup gracing the mantelpieces of many talented players at the Club over the coming years.”

Chorley Wildcats sharpen their claws at CTC
Chorley Wildcats, the sports group for children with a disability run by Mike Mason, enjoyed a morning out in the spacious surroundings of Chorley Tennis Club.

The Wildcats usually rendezvous at All Seasons’ Sports Centre in Chorley, and every week they experience a different sport. For some time now, Mick Bennett, long-term member of Chorley Tennis Club and captain of last year’s victorious Bolton Men’s D Team, has been visiting the Wildcats at their indoor venue to provide tennis coaching. When Mike Mason asked if it might be possible for the Wildcats to enjoy tennis coaching out in the open air, on the Club’s seven courts, the Club was very pleased to accommodate them.

Around 22 children with attendant Wildcat volunteers, Sea Cadets and volunteers from Chorley Tennis Club attended a fun-filled tennis session. At the end of the morning, all the Wildcats were thrilled to receive a medal, and a certificate from the Club.

“The day was a great success,” said Mike Mason. “It was a pleasure playing outside, in a safe environment with space for the children to have a hit. They all enjoyed it hugely and were very enthusiastic. They achieved a lot simply because they had the opportunity to really try tennis out, with people around to help and provide guidance.”

The Wildcats are working towards the Club Mark through Chorley Borough Council.

“Links with mainstream clubs are very good for the children,” says Mike. “We have players from local clubs in karate, golf, judo and rugby who come down to the Club and help get the children involved in activity. For them, it’s a healthy dose of reality: they are mixing with real people who do real things in the real world, and who focus on the children’s ability, not their disability. It leads to a strong sense of inclusion and self-belief; the children learn there’s nothing to be afraid of in having a go.”

Dea Parkin, Head of Development at Chorley Tennis Club, says: “We were delighted to welcome the Wild Cats. We had an excellent turn-out from club members eager to help. While the Club is members-only, it is still a community facility and we do what we can to foster good relations with other clubs – we have Girl Guides coming for a session soon!”
